Wisdom From Science Fiction

While reading “God Emperor of Dune” by one of my favorite authors Frank Herbert, I found this gem:

“Liberal bigots are ones who trouble me most. I distrust the extremes. Scratch a conservative and you find someone who prefers the past over any future. Scratch a liberal and you find a closet aristocrat. It’s true! Liberal governments always develop into aristocracies. The bureaucracies betray the true intent of people who form such governments. Right from the first the little people who formed the governments which promised to equalize the social burdens found themselves suddenly in the hands of bureaucratic aristocracies. Of course all bureaucracies follow this pattern, but what hypocrisy to find this under a communized banner.” (page 160)

Frank Herbert had this published in 1981. I suspect it was written much earlier, since the original book this story is a sequel of, was published in 1965. So my thought that liberals are closet aristocrats is nothing new. Since most of our learning and entertainment comes from liberals, I am not surprised that I never heard this before I came up with the idea in this blog. See “All Men are Created Equal”.
